You’ll spend four nights at top rated Hotels such as Hotel Skálakot, Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon, Hotel Rangá and Hotel Húsafell. In only a few days you will see vastly different landscapes and some of Iceland’s most precious gems of nature.
Day 1.
From your hotel, we’ll head out for the south shore in a specially outfitted super-jeep. First up are the southern landscapes that once were under sea level. We’re headed into the beautiful Þórsmörk area, named after the thunder god, Thor. You’ll see why the vehicle is modified as we cross the river to get to our destination. Þórsmörk is a valley with endless hiking opportunities surrounded by glaciers, old volcanoes and beautiful growth. The last eruption in this area was in 2010 in the famous Eyjafjallajökull glacier. After a spectacular encounter with nature, we head to our hotel for the night, making one last stop at the breathtaking Seljalandsfoss waterfall.
Day 2.
Our day starts off at Skógarfoss waterfall and the impressive black sand beaches of the south shore. Black volcanic sand stretches 450 Kilometres along the south shore of Iceland. On a good day we can drive down, onto the beach where we can often experience the other-worldly area in solitude. One of the must-see places is the towering basalt columns in Reynisfjara, iconic for the area. We head for the small town of Vík before our journey over the vast lava fields which came from an enormous eruption in 1783, which is the world’s greatest lava flow in historic times. Our goal today is the glacier lagoon and the diamond beach. A boat ride on the lagoon is a must. We’re now in Vatnajökull national park.
Day 3.
Let’s go to the moon. Today we are leaving the lowlands and heading into the highland. It’s a drive through surreal, moon-like landscapes. Lava fields and vast lava desert, glaciers, craters and colourful mountains, making this a day unlike anything else.
Day 4.
Today it’s time for the Golden Circle, the classic sights of Iceland. Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir hot spring and Þingvellir national park. In the late afternoon we navigate over the Cold Valley, Kaldidalur up to the second largest glacier in Iceland, Langjökull. The accommodation for the night is Hotel Húsafell with wonderful hiking opportunities in the area.
Day 5.
The Borgarfjörður area has many options. We’ll start the day with a tour to one of the many lava caves in the area or go for a hike in Húsafell. Remainder of the day can be spent exploring the beautiful Hraunfossar, the lava waterfalls, as well as the largest hot spring in the world, Deildartunguhver. You can even have a dip in Krauma spa before we head back to Reykjavík via Hvalfjörður, which in Icelandic is known as Whale fjord.
